Job Summary

The Director of Estimating will provide direction to the estimating division on evaluating bid specifications and drawings, ensuring that all items required are completed to successfully bid and win projects. He/she will evaluate each project during the point of bidding inception to ensure the specifications are aligned with Donnelly’s organizational focus. They will ensure all bids are within the proper financial margins outlined by the company to ensure appropriate profitability. With the direction from the EVP of Construction, he/she will develop strategic goals to assist in the continued growth of the department in accordance with Donnelly’s mission.

  • Oversee Estimating division and provide leadership to the Estimators and Administrative Assistant by encouraging team-building, employee motivation, and training
  • Assess cost factors and prepare estimates used for management purposes such as planning, organizing, and scheduling work; preparing bids; selecting vendors or subcontractors; and determining cost effective solutions
  • Research business trends and competitor strategies to ensue division is at the forefront of industry expectations
  • Will monitor each bid and assess price structure to ensure it reflects the correct scope of work and minimize exclusions
  • Consistently follow up on submitted bids and budgets with GC to close business
  • Prepare, coordinate, and review status of plan reproduction and subcontractor bid packages with Administrative Assistant
  • Assess proper subcontractors and vendors for best jobs and ensures bids are received and priced correctly. (i.e. Tax Exempt)
  • Verifies that Donnelly has the proper coverage from subcontractors on bid day
  • Ability to collaborate across functions to manage cost and price factors that influence customer acquisition, retention, and revenue
  • Review blueprints and accurately delineates the scope of work required for the project
  • Properly turns over bid documents to the Construction Department at time of award with all relevant information needed
  • Maintain a thorough understanding of Donnelly’s business infrastructure that includes Service, Maintenance, Special Projects, and Construction to ensure alignment with estimating capacity
  • Assess performance of division and develop areas of improvement through structured metrics reporting
  • Put necessary quality control processes in place to ensure bid specification meet DMC standards
  • Maintains proper safety standards in accordance with Donnelly regulations
  • Will need to maintain an acceptable attendance record by not exceeding five (5) unapproved absences per year

Position Requirements/Experience/Education

  • A minimum of 7 years working as an Estimating supervisor in HVAC or similar service industry
  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Ability to treat sensitive information with the highest level of confidentiality
  • Possess skill and understanding in conceptual estimating
  • Proven project estimating and/or project management success
  • Above average proficiency in MS Office, Word, Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Knowledge of estimating software programs and performance metrics
  • Professional, ethical, and a team player willing to grow with the company
